8 minor quakes jolt Surigao del Norte town in a day

MANILA, Philippines – Eight earthquakes, many of which occurred within an hour of each other, were recorded east of Burgos town in Surigao del Norte on Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. A 4.1-magnitude tremor which has a depth of 21 kilometers was felt in the eastern part of Burgos at 6:20 a.m. At 9:43 a.m., a 4.8-magnitue quake was recorded 137 km east of Burgos at a 62-km depth. The third earthquake, felt at 9:53 a.m., measured 5.3 and rattled the eastern part of Burgos. At 10:35 a.m., a 4.5-magnitude quake hit Burgos for the fourth time. It was plotted 118 km east of Burgos with a depth of 71 km. The fifth tremor, measured 5.5 and located 113 km east of Burgos with a depth of 85 km, occurred at 10:43 a.m. At 11:04 a.m., a 4.9-magnitude shake was recorded 117 km east of Burgos with a depth of 125 km. A small earthquake measuring 3.5 magnitude struck at 11:37 a.m. It was located 116 km east of the town with a depth of 62 km. The eighth earthquake happened at 2:15 p.m. and it measured 4.2-magnitude. It was located 57 km of Burgos and has a depth of 7 km.

Tsunami reaches Hawaii after 7.7 earthquake strikes western Canada

After barreling across the Pacific Ocean for hours, a tsunami spawned by an earthquake in Canada struck the Hawaiian Islands. Waves between 3 and 7 feet were expected to lash the islands beginning about 10:28 p.m. Saturday (4:28 a.m. Sunday ET), the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The first waves to hit Honolulu didn't seem much stronger than usual. But scientists said don't be fooled by the initial waves, which often aren't the biggest. “It's not just one wave, it's a succession of waves,” Gerard Fryer, senior geophysicist at the center, told reporters. “The following waves, I am sure, will be bigger.” But he noted that the tsunami will not be as significant as the devastating quake and tsunami that killed thousands in Japan in March 2011. Local television showed images of bumper-to-bumper traffic on roads leading from the coast to inner ground. About 80,000 people live in evacuations zones in the island of Oahu, the island where Honolulu is located. John Cummings, spokesman for Honolulu Emergency Management, said officials have opened 26 centers for evacuees. “All islands and all shorelines will be affected when it comes in,” Cummings said. Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle urged residents who are already on higher ground to not clog traffic. Officials expressed concerns about emergency vehicles getting by in heavy traffic. But the tsunami warning came at an unfortunate time -- when thousands of revelers packed streets in Honolulu for the annual Hallowbaloo festival. Even Hawaiians accustomed to tsunami warnings spared no effort in bracing for the worst. Honolulu resident Victoria Shioi filled her bathtub with water, set her refrigerator to the coldest setting and gathered candles in case of water or power outages. The tsunami was spawned by an earthquake in western British Columbia, prompting a local tsunami warning and sending some residents toward higher ground. “A (magnitude) 7.7 is a big, hefty earthquake -- not something you can ignore,” Fryer said. “It definitely would have done some damage if it had been under a city.” Instead, the quake struck about 139 kilometers (86 miles) south of Masset on British Columbia's Queen Charlotte Islands. No major damage was reported. The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for western British Columbia from Vancouver to the southern panhandle of Alaska. Canadians as far as Prince Rupert on mainland British Columbia felt the quake

At the Seismology Lab at the University of Washington, there is concern that the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred on the British Columbia coast over the weekend could affect Washington.

“Earthquakes trigger more earthquakes," said Washington State seismologist John Vidale, who has long studied how different fault zones in Southern California affect each other, and is looking at the potential for the same effects here.

“We need to watch the whole region with extra care,” said Vidale.

The earthquake caused virtually no damage to the sparsely settled group of islands known as Haida Gwaii, formerly named the Queen Charlottes. The quake did cause a small tsunami in Hawaii, but it was the sirens and the warnings that attracted the most attention.

But scientists who study these things say even though there were no collapsed buildings or boats washed inland, make no mistake, a magnitude 7.7 is a big earthquake, considered one of the most significant along the northwest coast in 60 years.

The quake was widely felt in British Columbia, and showed up on instruments in Washington.

Scientists also looked to see if the quake affected volcanos in Washington, and will remain on alert for at least several more weeks. So far, everything is quiet.

The problem, says Vidale, is that the West Coast, from Alaska to northern California, is under tremendous geologic pressure as it’s forced up against the basin that forms the Pacific Ocean.

Release the pressure in a major way along one fault, and it can then add to the pressure on another fault. As of early Monday afternoon, more than 130 aftershocks were recorded, including one more than 100 miles south of the quake’s epicenter, thought to be on the Cascadia Subduction zone.

The subduction zone threatens a much larger quake of approximately a magnitude 9 from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to Cape Mendicino California. The Haida Gwaii quake is not located along a subduction zone

Powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquakes strikes Guatemala killing at least 48

GUATEMALA - A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Guatemala on Wednesday, killing at least 48 people, injuring about 150 and leaving 23 unaccounted for, government officials said. They warned that the official toll was preliminary and could rise. “This is the largest earthquake we have had since the one in 1976,” President Otto Pérez Molina said at a news conference, recalling the temblor that killed about 23,000 people. The earthquake on Wednesday, centered off the Pacific Coast of Guatemala, struck at 10:35 a.m., leveling houses and damaging government buildings, schools and roads. “It was too strong,” said Yesenia Miranda, 30, a pastor at a church in the department of San Marcos, the area hardest hit. “We’ve never lived through anything like this.” During the earthquake, the church’s walls cracked and its windows broke, said Ms. Miranda, who is helping operate a relief center out of the rooms that were not damaged. The city’s hospital, she said, had extensive damage and was operating at less than capacity. After a wall at a local prison fell, breaching security, 98 inmates were taken to a jail in nearby Quetzaltenango. Although no major damage was reported outside of Guatemala, shaking could be felt in buildings as far as San Salvador and Mexico City. Mr. Pérez Molina placed San Marcos, adjacent to the border with Mexico, under the highest disaster alert level and traveled there to assess the damage. Saying that aftershocks were likely, he asked people to evacuate buildings, especially those made of adobe. Shortly after the earthquake was felt, Twitter users began posting photographs of homes with deeply cracked walls, surrounded by small mounds of debris and buried cars. In some pictures, roads leading to San Marcos appeared to be entirely blocked by landslides. In a dizzying video, lamps were swinging and a panicked dog could be heard in the background.

6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes near Vancouver Island

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake occurred off Vancouver Island Wednesday night. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the quake occurred about 182 kilometres southwest of Port Hardy, B.C. around 9 p.m. ET. There were no immediate reports of any damage. No tsunami warnings have been issued. A number of tsunami warnings were issued when a 7.7-magnitude quake struck off B.C.’s coast on Oct. 27, but all were later downgraded. At that time, the coastal area from the north tip of Vancouver Island to Cape Decision, Alaska was in potential danger. The quake was felt across north-central B.C. and some low-lying communities were evacuated as a precaution.

Magnitude 4.3 earthquake strikes eastern Kentucky

The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake centered in Kentucky also rattled at least three other states.

The USGS website says the epicenter of the 4.3 magnitude earthquake on Saturday afternoon was about 10 miles west of Whitesburg. Residents in eastern Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee reported feeling the temblor.

National Weather Service spokesman Jeff Carico says employees at the office in Jackson, which is about 60 miles northwest of Whitesburg, felt the ground shake for about 15 seconds. He says the office has gotten numerous calls, but so far no one has reported any serious damage.

A strong quake centered off northeastern Japan shook buildings as far away as Tokyo on Friday and triggered a one-meter tsunami in an area devastated by last year's Fukushima disaster, but there were no reports of deaths or serious damage. The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, the U.S. Geological Survey said, and thousands of coastal residents were ordered to evacuate to higher ground, but the tsunami warning was lifted two hours after the tremor struck. The March 2011 earthquake and following tsunami killed nearly 20,000 people and triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years when the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant was destroyed, leaking radiation into the sea and air. Workers at the plant were ordered to move to safety after Friday's quake. Tokyo Electric Power Co, the operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant, reported no irregularities at its nuclear plants. All but two of Japan's 50 nuclear reactors have been idled since the Fukushima disaster as the government reviews safety. The quake measured a “lower 5” in Miyagi prefecture on Japan's scale of one to seven, meaning there might be some damage to roads and houses that are less quake resistant. The scale measures the amount of shaking and in that sense gives a better idea of possible damage than the magnitude. The quake registered a 4 in Tokyo. The one-meter tsunami hit at Ishinomaki, in Miyagi, at the centre of the devastation from the March 2011 disaster. All Miyagi trains halted operations and Sendai airport, which was flooded by the tsunami last year, closed its runway. Five people in the prefecture were slightly injured. “I was in the centre of the city the very moment the earthquake struck. I immediately jumped into the car and started running away towards the mountains. I'm still hiding inside the car,” said Ishinomaki resident Chikako Iwai. I have the radio on and they say the cars are still stuck in the traffic. I'm planning to stay here for the next couple of hours.” There are vast areas of Ishinomaki that still have not been cleaned up since last year's tsunami. Many houses lie in ruins, full of rubble. Workers by the shore still sort through thousands of cars that were swamped and destroyed. The cars are piled up and being taken apart for parts and scrap. Narita airport outside Tokyo was back in action after a brief closure for safety checks. There were small tsunamis, measuring in the centimeters, elsewhere near the epicenter. Tokyo, with a population of 12 million, sits on the junction of four tectonic plates: the Eurasian, North American, Philippine and Pacific. The sudden bending or breaking of any plate can trigger an earthquake.
