Jesus’ words are a forceful claim to Divinity; otherwise the crowd would not have attempted to stone him. They understood His claim to Divinity; they knew that He was saying He was God! They would not have been incensed with anger had he said anything else. Had he claimed to be a mere man or a Prophet they would not have taken up stones to kill him.

The reference is to John 8:58 where Jesus says, “before Abraham was, I Am” and it is a reference to Exodus 3:14 where God reveals his name as “I Am” to Moses in the burning bush.

John 8:58-59
:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

:59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

We need neither, take up an argument about Greek verbiage, or tense, in that the people of Jesus’ time understood His claim to Divinity. Therefore, the only questions that can be asked are, did Jesus lie, or was He crazy? I think the bulk of Scripture supports the fact that He was not lying, nor was He crazy. Then you must come to the only logical conclusion, and that is, that He knew Himself to be God and said so in John 8:58.
